VETERANS TRACK AND FIELD LEAGUE over the past weeks we have been in discussion with Barnet and District AC with a view of forming a composite team. We reached a successful conclusion and will be competing in the Southern Counties Veteran League, Herts and North Middlesex Division.
All matches are on a Monday Evening, with the first fixture on 29 April at Lee Valley. The remaining fixtures are 20 May at Lee Valley, 10 June at Lee Valley and 8 July at Hemel Hempstead.
Age Groups are Men and Women 35-49 2 competitors in all running events, 1 per event in walk and field events, 50-59 1 competitor in all events, 60+ 1 competitor in selected events, to be decided in each division.

EXCELLENT PEFORMANCES AT WATFORD the first Watford Open took place last Wednesday, with 14 Shaftesbury runners competing. There were outstanding performances from recent new member GEORGE GROOM U15 running 59.76 in the 400m which ranks him No.8 UK U15 in 2013. MELISSA COURTNEY U23 decimated her PB in the 3000m running 9:37.39 which ranks her No.3 UK U23 in 2013. Finally SABRINA BAKARE U20 ran 25.12 in the 200m which puts her just outside the UK top ten in 12th place. See results below which some outstanding performances from our Young Athletes and Juniors.
NATIONAL ROAD RELAYS best wishes to our Men’s and Women’s teams who will competing this Saturday at Sutton Park, Birmingham, then on Sunday it is the turn of our Young Athletes. It has been announced that the Southern Championships will also be incorporated within the National Championships.
UPDATE ON LONDON MINI MARATHON congratulations to ELLA COHEN U13 who has been selected to represent the London Borough of Brent. Also ELEANOR HUNT U20 has been selected for the East Regional team.
JULIAN GOATER following the issue of his book ‘The Art of Running Faster’, he will be presenting a free online seminar on Wednesday 10 April. The presentation will be available for download from the Human Kinetics website shortly after the event. http://humankinetics.me
CROSS COUNTRY TOP 15 RANKINGS Athletics Weekly have just published their rankings for 2012-2013, which featured two Shaftesbury athletes - BETH POTTER Scottish Champion had a solid season, especially in the McCain X/C Challenge races, also third in the British University Championships, placed her 9th place Senior Woman. MICHAEL CALLEGARI following his National runner-up position, and third in the Southern Championships, placed him 5th place Under 20 Man.
Also mentioned, but not ranked was LIZZIE BIRD Under 20 Women, who was 8th at Sunderland.
ENGLAND ATHLETICS FEE as from the 1 April it is your responsibility to pay the annual fee of £10. All matters concerning EA are being discussed again at the next Shaftesbury council meeting on Monday 15 April. The deadline for the payment of the EA fee is 30 June, so no one needs to panic. All members are registered and have a competition number, the only missing part is the payment of the fee. In the meantime, if you want, you can send a cheque for £10 made payable to England Athletics, which we will forward to EA on your behalf. THE GEOFF HARROLD 10K MEMORIAL CUP will take place this year on Sunday 12 May at Lee Valley. There will be a 5K combined Men and Women’s race this year for the first time. The 5K race starts at 10.30am and the 10K race starts at 11.15am. Information and entry form attached.

”LONDON MINI MARATHON” - For those who are helping as volunteers on the day with Nadeem - We now have all the volunteers 85 required. Therefore, please only turn up to help as a volunteer if Nadeem has confirmed you are on the list as a marshal for the event.
Please remember, you will need to arrive nice & early at Old Billingsgate for 6.30am so that your Area Team Leader can distribute your kit and give you a final briefing to the roles you will be responsible for on the day. Tea, coffee and pastries will be provided for us from 6.45am onwards. Please note, if you are travelling by car, you cannot park on the course, or at Old Billingsgate itself. It is recommended that you park on Great Tower Street or Eastcheap and then it's just a short walk through to Old Billingsgate. Alternatively, there are a few limited free parking spaces along Dowgate Hill, the street opposite Old Billingsgate.
Thank you once again for agreeing to volunteer at this event. Without your help, the Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon would not be as well organised or as successful as it is! The financial contribution that Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers receives from The London Marathon Charitable Trust allows the Club to refurbish its facilities and take on many Nationwide competitive commitments throughout the year. HATFIELD MIDWEEK 5K SERIES will be taking place later in the year. For those who have a good memory (I would say at least 25 years ago) there was a superb series of road races, 2 in St Albans (10k and 5k), and 1 in Welwyn (8k), which at one stage we had at least 30 Humbugs toeing the line.
Therefore Garden City Runners are pleased to announce that the first running of the Hatfield Midweek 5K Series (Sponsored by Affinity Water). There will be three races on the following dates: Tuesday 24 September 2013 (Incorporating the Herts Senior Champs), Tuesday 8 October 2013 (Incorporating the Herts Vets Champs) and Tuesday 22 October 2013. There are team and individual prizes.
Entries are now open at http://www.races.gardencityrunners.org.uk/. Cost of each race for affiliated club members is £6 with a £3 discount if all three races are entered. There is a strict race limit of 300 so early entries are recommended.
The races will take place in the Hatfield Business Park area, race headquarters are in Affinity Water HQ, Tamblin Way, Hatfield, AL10 9EZ and all races will all start at 7.45pm. COACH EDUCATION COURSES for the period to the end of May to be held in London and the South have just been published. If you want more information, contact Nadeem Shaikh (Coaching Secretary) via email at: email@example.com. The club will pay for courses; the only commitment we ask is for you to coach at Allianz Park at least one day a week.
Results – I endeavour to publish as many results as possible, as my main source is the power of 10 website. Unfortunately all races do not make the PO10. Therefore feel free to e-mail me the race, date and result if you have it, if not the result there is a good chance I can find it on Google.

The Bournemouth Bay 10k took place on 7 April. FRANK BAILEY U23 had an excellent win by 6 seconds (PB 32.52), taking 13 seconds off his PB set in 2010, REBEKAH GARDINER U23 finished in 19th place (PB 38.38 2nd Woman) taking 6 seconds off her PB set in 2011.
The Watford Minors Meeting took place on 7 April. 80m Race 1 MAAYAN RADUS U11 finished 5th (14.5), then in the 600m Race 1 MAAYAN finished 3rd (2:13.2), 800m Race 1 LIA RADUS U13 finished 4th (2:47.1)
The SFA Alumni Invitational took place in Nacogdoches, Texas, USA on 6 April. 800m HARRY SAGEL U20 (Rice University) continued his outstanding form of 2013 winning with another PB (1:51.64) taking 1.03 seconds off his run 2 weeks ago, and is ranked No.5 UK U20 in 2013.
The Sam Houston Invitational took place in Huntsville, Texas, USA on 6 April. 1500m CLAIRE MILES (Lamar University) opened her Collegiate season by finishing 3rd (SB 4:44.16) , then CLAIRE won the 5000m taking 24.80 seconds off her personal best set in 2010 (18:24.00).
The Oxford/Cambridge v Penn/Cornell University took place Cornell, New York, USA on 6 April. 1500m JAKE SHELLEY U23 (Oxford University) finished in 2nd place (SB 3:57.42). Javelin 800g AIDAN REYNOLDS U20 (Oxford University) had an impressive win (65.49m).
The Bedfordshire AAA Open Meeting took place on 6 April. 200m Heat SX1 SHAQUILLE THOMAS U20 improved his Watford run with a (PB 23.6). 800m Heat SX1 DEREECE O’CALLAGHAN U20 had an impressive win (SB 2:01.3) only .7 of a second off his PB. Heat SX3 SABRINA BAKARE U20 had an excellent race finishing 2nd (PB 2:27.0). Shot 4kg JOANNA BLAIR in her first competition of the year produced a PB (9.93m), and in the 600g Javelin JOANNA had an emphatic win (PB 46.97m).
The Sun Angel Classic took place in Tempe, Arizona, USA on 5-6 April. 800m LUCY YATES (University of Utah) finished in 15th place (SB 2:17.55).
The Watford Open Graded Meeting took place on 3 April. 200m Heat SX4 SABRINA BAKARE U20 showed good early season form with a comfortable win (SB 25.12 w-1.9) just outside the UK top 10 in 12th place, Heat SX5 recent new member SHAQUILLE THOMAS U20 finished in 3rd place (SB 25.02 w-3.8). 400m Heat SX2 recent new member GEORGE GROOM U15 in his first ever 400m broke 60 seconds (PB 59.76), and is ranked No.8 UK U15 in 2013, Heat SX3 DANIEL ABREY U23 had an excellent win (PB 54.39) taking 4.61 seconds off his 2009 time, Heat SX4 DEREECE O’CALLAGHAN U20 in his first race as a Junior had a very comfortable win (SB 50.66). 800m Heat SX1 JACK BLOOM U13 finished in 7th place (2:49.30), Heat SX3 SAM GRIFFITHS U17 following an excellent winter had a good win (SB 2:10.62), NATHAN BLOOM U17 finished in 6th place (PB 2:20.17) taking 23.93 seconds off his 2010 time, CIARA STEWART U20 finished in 7th place (SB 2:24.06), Heat SX5 BILLY KELSEY U17 up against 2 good senior runners finished in 3rd place (SB 2:00.81), JAMES SOTHCOTT U20 finished 5th place (SB Outdoors 2:01.62). 1500m Heat SX5 MOHAMED MOHAMED U23 finished in 6th place (SB 4:11.23). 3000m MELISSA COURTNEY U23 first time outdoors in 2013, ran a superb race finishing 18th, 2nd Woman (PB 9:37.39) taking 13.79 seconds off her 2010 time, and is ranked No.3 UK U23 in 2013, KHALID-ALI AHMED U17 first time ever on the track, finished 19th (PB 9:47.79).
6 April – OAK HILL – MARIE SATO U15 finished 4th with a new PB (20.10), SAAM KYU SMART U15 finished 5th (20.20), STUART SINGER V50 finished 6th (20.32), SUZU SATO U20 finished 8th (21.24), EMMA DWAN U17 finished 9th (21.25), NICOLE BOWEN U13 running for the first time finished 17th (22.54), OLIVIA BOWEN U17 finished 19th with a new PB (23.05), NATALIA PEREVERZINA U20 finished 29th (25.14), LYDIA HERRIDGE U17 finished 36th (27.12), TATIANA KARPOVA V50 finished 48th (31.37), ANDREY PEREVERZINA V50 finished 49th (31.55).
